Espresso Tonic

Espresso Tonic

Espresso tonic is simple yet incredibly refreshing, both as a beverage and as a concept. Whereas most espresso based drinks incorporate dairy or non-dairy alternatives, tonic gives the drink a dry crisp quality, along with botanical aromatics and a pleasant bitterness from quinine that pairs perfectly with espresso.

According to Perfect Daily Grind, the drink originated in Sweden from Anne Lunell, a former Swedish barista and brewers cup champion as well as founder of Koppi Roasters, in 2007. It is both delicious and mesmerizing, as the crema forms a luscious foam at the top of the glass like a freshly poured beer and the espresso slowly mixes with the bubbly tonic below. While there are many recipes out there, here is a simple one to get you started.

What you’ll need

  • 1x Espresso Machine
  • 1x Grinder
  • 1x Scale
  • 1x Tamper
  • Double shot of espresso
  • 100 g tonic
  • 100 g ice

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Assemble everything you’ll need from the list above
  2. Weigh out your ice and tonic in a glass of your choice
  3. Pull a double shot of espresso (see recipe)
  4. Slowly pour the espresso over your ice and tonic
  5. (Optional) Add garnish, bitters, and/or liquer (a splash of limoncello is a nice touch!)
  6. Stir and enjoy!

Variables

In addition to garnishes (such as citrus wedges or peels, herbs like rosemary, and other aromatics), bitters, and liqueurs, you can also play with different tonics and alternatives (we're a big fan of 1642's yuzu soda). While you can also play with syrups, most tonics will already be quite sweet, so depending on how sweet you like your beverages, you can adjust to your liking. Cheers!
